Aurora Guitar Ensemble returns to stage after two years

Aurora Guitar Ensemble returns to stage after two years to celebrate their fifteenth birthday

After two years of virtual rehearsals and cancelled concert dates, the break-out Aurora Guitar Ensemble (Aurora) return to the stage at the Queensland Multicultural Centre on Saturday 6 November.

Formed in 2007, Aurora is celebrating 15 years of performances in the Brisbane community, with notable features in Adelaide and Sydney.

Director of the ensemble, Dr Paul Svoboda, said that this return to the stage has been long awaited between lockdowns, Zoom rehearsals, and capacity restrictions.

“The arts have been hit especially hard during COVID-19, and the opportunities to support live music have been limited,” Dr Svoboda said.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to have the ensemble together again, playing for a live audience.

“While we have produced amazing virtual performances during lockdown, nothing quite compares to taking the stage and playing together.”

Aurora last performed in an invitational at the Sydney Guitar Festival in September 2019.

“Like a lot of groups, we couldn’t have predicted that Sydney would be our last performance,” Dr Svoboda said.

In 2018 Aurora were given the honour to close the Finale Concert at the International Adelaide Guitar Festival. Within fifteen minutes of finishing their performance, they became the highest selling CD of the festival. World renowned guitarists, Slava and Leonard Grigoryan, were amongst the performers on the night.

“Through the guidance and direction of Dr Paul Svoboda, the Aurora Guitar Ensemble have evolved into one of the finest guitar ensembles we’ve heard anywhere,” Mr Slava Grigoyrian said.

“It is always a joy to see this group of young guitarists making music together. Always inspiring.”

Aurora is an invitation-only group, most of the guitarists being former students of Dr Svoboda.

“Over our fifteen years performing there have been many highlights – the Adelaide Guitar Festivals, QPAC with Lior, and always creating a close connection with our audiences,” Dr Svoboda said.

“We’ve all been united through our love of music, and have found family in one another.

“It is our hope to reunite with our local community to make some magic.”
