Boadicea opens Friday 9 April and runs until 1 May.
Theatreroo the brainchild of Brisbane composer/producer Clarry Evans.
With so many theatre practitioners out of work in the Covid era, Clarry has taken the bold step of leasing a new venue to stage professional musical theatre, featuring some of Queensland’s top performers. He has brought on board the highly-experienced theatre and television director, Denny Lawrence – whose credits include Bodyline, The Bill, A Country Practice and the award-winning series MDA – as well as dozens of theatre productions, many of which have played throughout Australia.
Together, Clarry and Denny wrote, and Denny directed, a new Australian musical, Utopia: the Australian Paraguayan Story, which was Theatreroo’s first show in their new venue. Their current production is Boadicea, a 60-min opera depicting the life and times of Boadicea, the Celtic Warrior Queen, who in 60 A.D. led an uprising against the Romans.
Boadicea is written by Clarry Evans and Judy Stevens, and features Lizzie Moore (Opera Queensland) as Boadicea with Matthew Newnham (Macbeth, QPAC), Matt Young (The Producers, Powerhouse), Chris Herden (Good Morning Vietnam, Queensland tour), Sandro Colarelli (Twelfth Night, QTC), Jennifer Ashley (Neighbours). With the 12-voice choir “The Scomodo Voce Singers” conducted by Joshua Blake. Musical Director is Sante DÉttorre.
Boadicea opens at The Basement Theatre at Twelfth Night in Bowen Hills from Friday April 9 and will play every Friday and Saturday night to 1 May. Boadicea: Celtic Cabaret will be followed by another new musical, Baby Boomer, which will premiere during May at The Basement.
