Gardening on balconies enables ordinary people to regenerate the biodiversity of Kurilpa / the West End Peninsula. The West End library is holding an event this Saturday, 12 July, titled “The mini home farm: Productivity in pots, pods and planters” to help you do exactly that.

Most of the land on which native plants and animals live in West End is privately owned. In 2021 West End had 4,940 flats or apartments. Many living in these apartments want a garden.

If you live in one of these apartments, units, or flats and want a garden, and need some guidance, the West End library has arranged a workshop for you.

“There are plenty of opportunities to grow fresh, delicious, organic food, even in a compact garden”, says the library.

Linda Brennan from Ecobotanica will share top tips and guide you through the pitfalls of growing food in small spaces. Learn about organic potting mixes and soil improvement, how to choose suitable fruit, veggies and herbs to grow, and the best options for sunny and shady areas. All to inspire you to become a mini farmer the whole year round!

The event, from 12.30 to 2pm, is free as long as you book ahead.

Phone West End Library on 07 3403 8620 to reserve your place.

Next week we’ll discuss gardens in the grounds of blocks of units. If you have a story to share, please contact me.
