BirdLife Australia, now Australia’s biggest bird conservation organisation, has landed. Created by the merger of Birds Australia and BOCA, BirdLife Australia represents everyone who cares about Australia’s native birds, taking an active role in protecting birds and their habitats.
“The need for an effective bird conservation organisation in Australia has never been greater,†said BirdLife Australia’s Chief Executive, Dr Graeme Hamilton. “Birds are a hugely important indicator of the health of our environment — habitat loss and fragmentation, global warming, invasive species and urban development all pose major threats to birds. We are the peak body in this country doing something about it through rigorous research and community action.â€
“This is an exciting time for us. With a bigger network of dedicated people we can be more effective champions for bird conservation and better representatives of the interests of bird lovers.”
BirdLife Australia President, Gerard Early, added “Since 1901, we’ve been passionate advocates for the protection of our native birds and now with more than 10,000 members across Australia and over 20,000 volunteers we’ll be stepping up our work to improve the prospects of Australia’s birds.â€
“Our programs will actively improve conservation outcomes for Australia’s birds. Our focus is on promoting people’s appreciation and understanding of birds. Our organisation is Australia’s strong, effective national voice for birds.â€
BirdLife Australia is dedicated to achieving outstanding conservation results for native birds and their habitats. With the specialised knowledge and the commitment of an Australia-wide network of members, volunteers and supporters, BirdLife Australia is creating a bright future for Australia’s birds.
