Are you a Brisbane resident who makes art, collaborates with others, and feels unappreciated? Then the “Creative Brisbane Collab.” is establishing a new set of awards aimed at showcasing the backroom deals that make your creative ventures possible.
Have you created something that really zings? That tells a story that applies as well in Brisbane as in Paris or Khartoum? Did you make Brisbane a more pleasant place to live? If so, apply for this award, and the world can know about your work. The applications for the awards open in January, will be judged in March and will be awarded in April.
Established for residents of the Brisbane Local Government area, there are nine categories of awards. While the City of Brisbane Award will be awarded independently of those applying for the awards, you will need to apply for the other categories.
Who applies? Residents of the Brisbane Local Government Area. That covers the Brisbane City Council. If you live in Redlands, Moreton Bay, Somerset Regional, Ipswich or Scenic Rim, I’m sorry, you aren’t eligible. But your council may be interested in setting up their own awards. Ask them.
All 350 affiliates of Creative Brisbane Collab. can apply. They don’t pay a fee. Others who live in Brisbane pay a $50 application fee.
The types of affiliates illustrate the skills that combine to create Brisbane’s culture. They include: Corporates and Consultants, Festivals, Performing and Visual Arts, Government & Agencies, Individuals, Institutes and Associations, Media, Communications & Public Relations, Studios and Production, Universities, Venues and Galleries. A lot of work goes into making Brisbane a fun place to live.
“The ‘Creative Brisbane Collab.’ was formed a few years ago, to bring art and culture and a broad creative community closer to the commercial economy.”, says Barton Green, the chair of Collab.
“Its role is to lobby governments for the health, well-being and jobs for creatives”, said Barton.
“The awards aim to showcase and demonstrate Brisbane’s creative life. They are unique to Australia. There is no similar awards model. While there are plenty of awards for great art, and for corporates, there are not yet any for both”, he said.
And Brisbane’s creative space is huge. It includes not only musicians, performers, and visual artists, but also architecture, robotics, and the many support teams that enable creativity. Brisbane residents are punching above their weight in creating a new world.
“What we are looking to do is recognise and celebrate the magic that can happen when creatives are well supported”, said Barton Green.
