Brisbane-born feature film The Song of Colour will have its world premiere as an official selection of the Brisbane Indie Film Festival on Friday, 9 January 2026 at 7:30pm at Five Star Cinemas, New Farm.
Written, filmed, and produced in Brisbane, the filmmakers are thrilled to debut the film in their hometown.
The Song of Colour is a tender, darkly comedic exploration of human connection in an increasingly isolated world. The film follows Ivy, a smart yet emotionally exhausted woman, as she navigates the wreckage of a broken relationship. Anchored by the eccentric Joseph, a local barista whose life-changing coffee helps her rediscover small joys, Ivy gradually allows herself to engage with the world and embrace the moments that make life meaningful.
From playful encounters to reflective interludes, Ivy’s journey celebrates the quiet power of kindness and connection. Through laughter, love, and poignant insights, the film reminds audiences that even in chaos, small acts of humanity can ripple outward to create a better world.
Director Ashley Dighton said: “Equal parts black comedy, philosophy and drama, the film is a story about how much we need each other to fully understand ourselves. It’s about finding the small joys to get us through the chaos of life, because any large arc of humanity is just powered by iterations of small humanity. In a time where social media and an obsession with advances in technology connect us in progressively artificial ways, we crave connection even though on the surface we have a glut of it – like stuffing yourself with empty calories while your body yearns for nutrition. It’s a timely reminder that in the obsession with progression, we need to make time to stay human.
Ivy is paralysed by the prospect of being moral in a world filled with iniquity outside her control, without realising the path to a moral world could be as simple as a kind word in your local cafe. She can’t fix the world’s problems singlehandedly. But she can make a moment better for another person, and if enough people have that attitude the shifting sands of each better moment turns the hourglass of social good at a community and national level. I want to give people permission (for those that feel they don’t have it) to see kindness as a strength that builds a better world.”
The film is written and directed by Ashley Dighton, produced by Kristie Yates, with Tim Dighton serving as Executive Producer.
Cast includes: Mia Grunwald (Ivy), Nicolas Angelosanto, Barbara Lowing, James Dyke (Liam).
