A Beginners Guide to Brisbane #StreetArt by Bruce

Bruce (we’ll call him that as he enjoys his anonymity) has just produced a photobook, “a beginner’s guide to Brisbane street art” which has been installed in the Bench Café, West End.  The pictorial ‘flick thru’ is on loan to the café until the end of November. Bruce, a school teacher in another life, developed an interest in street art through accidental encounters while overseas. From Granada to Berlin, from London to Morocco Bruce has been recording murals and graffiti, undertaking workshops and walking countless kilometres on street tours. Always the avid collector Bruce has, at different points in...

Butterfly abundance at Paradise Street Neighbourhood Garden #WestEnd

The West End Festival offers something for everyone: music, colour, action, and discussion. But for those, like me, who want something quieter and more contemplative, there was also the Butterfly Walk led by West End’s own Butterfly Man, Frank Jordan. Frank is a knowledgeable guide. He has planted a vast range of butterfly host plants at the Paradise Street and Jane Street Gardens. Frank is...

With writing partner Judy Stevens he’s brought to Brisbane and national stages such memorable shows as Macbeth: The Contemporary Rock Opera,...

Places for People Places for People, a debate on how we create and use public spaces in our crowded suburb, will include contributions from former Councillor Helen Abrahams, Indigenous residents, and local award-winning landscape architects who propose a  wealth of new small open spaces throughout the  suburb. These could include closing ...

Kurilpa Beggars’ Banquet: Its all about the vibe

“The 2nd Annual Kurilpa Beggars’ Banquet To Conclude The 9th Annual Kurilpa Derby” Sunday, October 23rd 2016 Last year, while the street was still closed after the Kurilpa Derby, community members set up tables and chairs for a sit down community dinner.  The dinner was entirely free because we did the whole thing ourselves.  The good news is … it’s on again and, like last year, everything is free. All we had to do last year was provide a space on the street and community members did the rest. Many will be bringing their family and friends down for...
