More than 20 residents braved the weather on Saturday afternoon to share their vision for West End’s new park.
Council acquired the vacant land on the corner of Thomas Street and Vulture Street for the new park but according to Cr Helen Abraham, the project brief does not include “community engagement activities”.
Cr Helen Abrahams and Labor’s candidate for The Gabba, Nicole Lessio, hosted the event to hear from the community about possible designs.
The West End community includes many landscape architects, community engagement specialists, biodiversity experts, educators and parents who have great ideas for the space.
“The workshop revealed the depth of experience residents have. Why would council choose to ignore them?” Ms Lessio said.
Ideas for the space focussed on multiple uses such as bench seating that could be used for skateboarding or parkour, an ampitheatre that doubled as a place for children to run, BBQ facilities, butterfly-attracting or bush food planting, an arbour for shade, a water feature, or a community blackboard.
Local elder Mr Sam Watson, who was not able to attend, has suggested the park be named to honour local Indigenous hero, Dundalee.
Council has slated October 31st as a completion date, so input is required as soon as possible.
