An intimate vinyl listening bar, Brisbane DJs, lively pop-up performances and access to the compelling exhibition ‘Olafur Eliasson: Presence’, the Gallery of Modern Art is perfect for an after-work drop-in every Friday night throughout the rest of May and June.
The first GOMA Up Late event was in 2008, a couple of years after GOMA opened. The after-hours program was launched that year to coincide with the exhibition ‘Picasso and his collection’, and featured live performances from artists like Kate Miller-Heidke. Since then, Up Late events have brought exhibitions to life after hours with live music (over 200 bands), DJs, bars and dining.
Exclusive to Brisbane, ‘Olafur Eliasson: Presence’ presents large-scale works that play with light, colour and perception — with the exhibition coming alive at night as we move through it. Evening visitors, for example, can bask in the pervasive glow of title work Presence 2026, or be entranced by the colourful SOS signal sent out into the darkness by Your lost lighthouse 2020.
The night pulses with dancers from the local freestyle community paying tribute to Olafur Eliasson’s early passion for breakdancing, DJs spinning sets inspired by ‘Presence’ in the River Room Bar, and live sound responding to the artworks composed by award-winning percussionist Vanessa Tomlinson, Director, Queensland Conservatorium.
WHEN: From May until 26 June, every Friday, 5.30pm to 8.30pm at the Gallery of Modern Art.
INFO: Experience Japanese-inspired cocktails, delicious snacks, and records played the way they were meant to be. For a full list of DJs, weekly Vinyl Listening Bar themes, and to purchase tickets visit: https://www.qagoma.qld.gov.au/gomafridaynights
