Politics in the Pub – #QLDVOTES2015

With the State Election only weeks away, pundits have written off the Electorate of South Brisbane as a “safe” Labor seat. Australian politics, however, have undergone some seismic shifts lately, with the emergence of minor parties and independents holding the balance of power in the Senate. Will we ever get to the European situation where constantly changing coalitions of parties and interest groups hold power? To explore these questions, and others, we’re holding a Politics in the Pub community forum on Wednesday 28th January at the Loft, upstairs at 100 Boundary St, West End. Know your Candidate – Karel Boele – #QLDVOTES2015

South Brisbane voters may be familiar with Karel Boele from his candidacy in the Griffith by-election in Feburary 2014. This is the first time he has contested a State seat. When I first met Karel Boele (pronounced “Bulla”) he did not have a permanent home in the electorate, in fact he was staying with friends. He speaks an Indigenous language, has worked in land rights, volunteers with community radio 4ZZZ, and is currently a paid carer for three orphan refugee children. Racism is a significant motivating issue for Mr Sri. He says that people rarely understand the economic and social implications of racism. It is...

Know your Electorate – South Brisbane #QLDVOTES2015

For those of us who don’t think there is life outside of the West End, it is useful to be reminded that the South Brisbane electorate also takes in Annerley, Dutton Park, East Brisbane, Highgate Hill, Kangaroo Point, Woolloongabba, and parts of Greenslopes and Coorparoo. The Electorate takes in major Brisbane hospitals as well as the arts and cultural precincts, and the Griffith University campus on South Bank. According to the South Brisbane State Electoral District (SED) profile developed by Queensland Treasury and Trade, South Brisbane has a total area of 15.1 km and a population of 55,067 persons....
